It’s no surprise that poplin is so popular. On one hand, it’s strong and incredibly durable, and on the other, it has a soft, shiny finish. It’s essentially a solid, all-round fabric that never fails. It’s also incredibly comfortable to wear, especially in summer when your poplin shirt is destined to rock gently in the lavender Sirocco breeze.

SHINE
Poplin is characterized by its characteristic ribbed structure and tightly closed weave. Okay, we know – it’s getting a bit nerdy, but this is what gives the fabric that special sheen we all love.
The poplin weave is at its best when woven tightly and from the right yarns, which must be compact and made from the best fibres, otherwise you risk the weave feeling too dull and casual.
Traditionally, poplin was a canvas weave constructed with fine silk warp yarns filled with a heavier wool yarn. This gives the fabric its classic ribbed texture.
LIGHT & STRONG
Today, poplin is primarily made from 100% cotton, which makes it lightweight, but the strength of the fabric is still retained. Other variations are made with wool, silk, satin, rayon or polyblend fabrics, but the basic concept is the same: two yarns of different thickness in a plain weave. That’s why you always get the best of both worlds with poplin; a thin and cool fabric with a slight drape that’s also super sturdy.
